Additional Details

After leading a local bus boycott, Dr. King was arrested for "loitering" near the Montgomery courthouse where one of his associates was on trial. King later told reporters that officers Strickland and Johnson twisted his arms "as if they were trying to break them," and at the jail "a couple of them grabbed me in the collar and choked me severely. I was about to lose my breath," per a wire report printed in the next day's Atlanta Constitution and elsewhere.
